Former Chicago star and professional wrestler Steve McMichael died on April 23, 2025, at the age of 67
Former Chicago Bears star and professional wrestler Steve “Mongo” McMichael died on April 23, 2025, at the age of 67. He suffered from a serious disease called ALS, which affects nerves and muscles. He died peacefully with his family by his side at a hospice in Joliet, Illinois, after a hospital stay. Jarrett Payton, the son of McMichael’s teammate Walter Payton, shared the sad news.
Steve McMichael played a vital role in the Chicago Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl victory, renowned for their formidable defense. He stood out as one of the Bears’ elite, amassing 92.5 sacks and earning a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Due to his declining health, the Hall of Fame delivered his gold jacket to his Illinois residence, where his teammates gathered to honor him in a touching celebration.
He was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, which gradually made it difficult for him to move, talk or breathe. His wife Misty cared for him and shared his story to raise awareness about ALS. She also pushed for his Hall of Fame honor. His daughter Macy and many friends are left to remember him.
Before his death, McMichael’s health deteriorated and he was moved from the ICU to hospice care. He was no longer able to react or breathe on his own. His sister thanked the Bears, the NFL and fans for their support and said he was ready to meet his family in heaven.
McMichael also shone as a professional wrestler in WCW, performing under the nickname “Mongo” and capturing the United States Championship title. He was part of the famous Four Horsemen group and worked with stars like Ric Flair, who called him an amazing person after his passing.
Many people, including Bears leaders, former teammates and fans, shared kind words about McMichael. They remembered him as a strong, kind person who inspired others, especially in his battle against ALS. “McMichael lives on through the stories told about him—a man who faced every challenge head-on and left a lasting mark on the hearts of those who knew him.”
