An officer who allowed teenagers to participate in a fighting game inside a youth detention center in Georgia has been fired and charged with murder after a child died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that Thomas Lee Hicks was a juvenile corrections officer at Waycross Regional Youth Detention Center where the victim lost consciousness in the presence of a staff member and other teens.

The youngster was taken to Memorial Health Hospital in Savannah and later kicked the bucket. His name and his age were not released.

Hicks was arrested on Tuesday in one count of second-degree murder two counts of cruelty to children and one count of breach of the oath of office.

According to records Hicks is being held in the Ware County Jail. It is not clear whether he has a lawyer and bail has not been set.

Commissioner Tyrone Oliver said in a statement Wednesday that he had been fired from the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
